Can exhaust make knocking noise?
If the muffler develops a leak from a hole, it will allow engine noise and exhaust to escape before going through the muffler. Another sign that there may be an issue with the muffler is a knocking noise coming from the bottom of the car, especially when hitting bumps.
Why is my exhaust knocking?
A chugging noise could mean a blockage in the exhaust system. If you hear rattling under the car it could mean that the exhaust system has become misaligned. If you can hear a loud metallic vibration, it usually means that something is touching the exhaust pipe or that a clamp, support bracket or mounting is loose.
Can an exhaust leak cause rod knock?
An exhaust leak can often sound like a lifter tick. Neither will make the engine fail catastrophically, at least not right away. A rod knock is not a tick-tick-tick, more of a tap-tap-tap in early stages. If it’s a rod knock, it will only get worse.

What does it mean when a car makes a loud exhaust noise?
A new sound coming from your exhaust system should never be ignored. Why does my car make a rattling noise when I start the engine?
In most cases, this sound is similar to rattling steel inside of a cage or clanking metal. The engine tone will be deeper and it’s common to hear periods of engine backfiring when you have an exhaust leak somewhere in the exhaust system. What’s the cause of this sound?
Where does the backfire noise come from in a car?
Backfiring. The backfire sound can occur in the intake or the exhaust system. If it occurs in the intake system, the noise will come from the fuel system (fuel injector throttle body) and if from the exhaust system (which is most common) will come from the exhaust pipe.
