Are rotten sills an MOT failure?
If a hole appears the rust will need to be repaired or the item replaced. The tester will also push the rusted area to test it for give. If there is too much give, the car will fail. The image, right, shows a rusted inner sill.
Why do car sills rust?
This is due to drainage holes for the roof clogging up, sending torrents of rain water cascading into the sills and rear wheel arches where it sits and eats away at the inner structure of the car. So after taking the angle grinder to the wheel arch, the outer skin is stripped off to reveal a corroded inner sill.

Is there corrosion on the inside of a Ford Focus?
The context is that I’m looking at a 2004 Ford Focus on eBay and the MOT history on the DVLA web site reports an advisory at the last MOT six months ago: None of the previous MOTs reported any corrosion, just the usual headlight bulbs, brake pads worn, etc. The last MOT just states the above in the Advisory section without any more detail.

If it’s an advisory then it hasn’t rotted or rusted through the sill which is an instant fail but it does depend on whether rusty means surface rust in the paint, underseal or if rust has actually set into the sill.

The outgoing Focus had rust issues had a few “high profile” areas. The current and soon to be replaced Mondeo has a number of rust problems. The worst vehicle in this respect is the KA I noted a rusty jack point on an example that was 14 months old, yes 14 months!

With most Japanese cars and almost every Ford model rust is always a problem. If its been on the road 8 years or more be very careful. I believe that the Japanese manufactures and Ford do this on purpose. They don’t want the car staying on the road for a long time, it makes good business sense.
