What is wasted spark in relation to ignition system?
Wasted spark ignition systems are a type of DIS, which uses one coil for every two cylinders. The coil provides the spark for one of the paired cylinders on the compression stroke and to the other on the exhaust stroke.
What is a waste spark ignition coil?
Since one plug is fired on the exhaust stroke, serving no real purpose, the system was known as a “waste spark system.” This style of ignition has negative and positive polarity sides to the coil; meaning the spark plug also has positive or negative polarity.
How do you test a Sparkd ignition coil?
The only safe way to test for spark is to use a spark plug tester tool. If a coil problem is suspected, measure the coil’s primary and secondary resistance with an ohmmeter. If either is out of specifications, the coil needs to be replaced.
Are there any disadvantages of wasted spark ignition?
In four stroke engines, spark occurs twice in one complete cycle i.e. at compression TDC and exhaust TDC (In some vehicles, there is a MAP sensor to identify the compression TDC. In such vehicles wasted spark can be avoided). Is there any disadvantage of this wasted spark?
How does a wasted spark system work in an engine?
The wasted spark system is an ignition system used in some four-stroke cycle internal combustion engines. In a wasted spark system, the spark plugs fire in pairs, with one plug in a cylinder on its compression stroke and the other plug in a cylinder on its exhaust stroke. The extra spark during the exhaust stroke has no effect and is thus “wasted”.
What does waste spark in ignition coil mean?
When the coil fires, both spark plugs spark at the same time, one in the cylinder with fuel and the other in the cylinder with exhaust. The spark in the cylinder with exhaust is called the waste spark. When waste spark first came out it was on the cutting edge.
How does a Citroen 2CV wasted spark system work?
Ignition system of a flat-twin Citroën 2CV. The wasted spark system is an ignition system used in some four-stroke cycle internal combustion engines. In a wasted spark system, the spark plugs fire in pairs, with one plug in a cylinder on its compression stroke and the other plug in a cylinder on its exhaust stroke.
