What causes worn cam lobes?
This can be caused by a lifter being out of position and striking the lobe, weak valve spring pressure, lack of oil pressure, or from stressful operating conditions like overspeeding. There are other types of damage a camshaft or its associated parts can incur besides just lobe wear.
What does the shape of the cam lobe determine?
A slight high spot on the base circle is called base circle runout. This is the maximum distance that the cam lobe pushes the lifter. Because the rocker arm ratio will multiply the overall valve lift, this should not to be confused with valve lift. The cam profile is the actual shape of the camshaft lobe.

You can measure the cam lobes with a 2 inch micrometer. Or in a pinch, a dial caliper may do the job. Start by measuring across the widest part of the base of the lobe to get the base circle diameter. Then measure the largest distance from the bottom of the base circle to the apex of the lobe.
