Is it bad if your engine starts knocking?
Knocking in your engine, also described as pinging, can mean one of several problems. The knocking sound often occurs when the air-fuel mixture is incorrect, which causes the fuel to burn in uneven pockets rather than uniform bursts. Left untreated, it can cause damage to the piston and cylinder wall.
How do I know if my engine is knocking?
If the smooth rumble you’re used to coming from your engine is replaced with a repetitive tapping or pinging sound that becomes louder and faster as you accelerate, that’s a classic sign of engine knock.
Why does my car make a tapping noise when I start up?
Anyway the tapping was caused by the coolant mixing with the oil thinning it out or maybe dripping down on the lifters. I stopped driving it and replaced the intake manifold gasket then changed the oil and ran a cleaning oil in the engine for a few hundred miles then changed the oil again.
Why does my car knock when I start it?
This would add air bubbles to the initial start which might take a moment to clear. Im my experience this will throw the timing considerably when started, which will cause a knocking in some engines. Thanks for contributing an answer to Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Stack Exchange!
What causes a Tap Tap Tap on the motor?
There are 2 places in the motor that cause the tap. 1- A sticky, slow-closing valve where a space appears and closing the space causes the tap tap tap on engine rotation as the valve is pushed open. 2- A tap occurs when the wear adjuster for one of the valves has sludge blocking oil to it.
What do I need to do about engine tapping?
Replacement of the valve lifters usually requires major disassembly of the engine. There are oil additives available that can free sticking lifters. This type of additive should be added as per the products recommendation. Frequent oil changes with additional treatments may be necessary in severe cases.
