What does a bearing seal do?
Bearing seals actively do double duty, preventing contaminants from reaching the inside of your parts while keeping lubricants from leaking out. Both roles can help extend the life of your bearings, but it’s crucial to find the right seals for your parts.
Can you remove the seal from a sealed bearing?
Very gently remove the rubber seals by prising out the seal from the inner lip. You can use a penknife or small screwdriver but do not push it too far into the bearing or you may damage the retainer (cage). Once satisfied that the bearing is completely grease-free, use a lint-free cloth to dry the bearing.

Dirt in particular will work its way into the gap between the shaft and seal, and gradually wear the seal material away, allowing oil to begin leaking.

The purpose of the axle seal is to keep transmission fluid from leaking. Depending on the size of the leak, it may be okay to drive with a leaking axle seal, but not for very long. If the leaking axle seal does not get fixed soon and the transmission is slipping, you could cause permanent damage to the transmission.
