Is diesel engine oil always black?
In most cases it is normal for diesel oil to turn black. This change is typically noticed several hundred miles after an oil change. This does not necessarily mean the oil is dirty or that the engine’s internals are dirty.
Why is my Duramax oil so black?
The 2008 6.6-liter Duramax uses EGR and recirculates a considerable amount of its exhaust back into the engine for reburning. The engine oil turning black almost immediately after an oil change is perfectly normal. In turn, specific diesel oils are produced to adapt to the higher demand.

Does synthetic oil turn black?
Engine oil also includes additives — chemical compounds designed to improve lubricant performance. Modern engines require these additives, found in both petroleum-based and synthetic oils. With them, your oil will darken, regardless of the number of heat cycles and abrasives present.
What is the best oil for 6.6 Duramax?
We highly recommend Amsoil Heavy Duty 15W-40 full synthetic engine oil for all Duramax diesel applications, or Amsoil Heavy Duty 5W-40 full synthetic engine oil for cold weather operation.

Is it normal for the oil to be dark in color right after?
They supposedly changed the oil, but the color is very dark, almost black. Definitely not light-colored/transparent. The oil change was performed along with other work (replacing alternator & brake pads). I’d run it back right away without a thought, but I’m wondering if this is normal for a 10-year old diesel car with 175,000 miles on it.
What’s the best color for new engine oil?
