Where is the oil pan drain plug?
The drain plug is a large nut or plug located under the oil pan at the bottom of the engine. If you can’t reach your oil drain plug easily, you’ll have to either crawl under your car to reach it or jack up the car.
What is the name of the bolt on the bottom of the oil pan that has to be removed to change oil?
Look at the bottom of the engine oil pan. Around the bottom of the pan, you should see a single bolt. That’s your oil drain plug. (Some vehicle models use a similar round plug, which you can pull to drain the oil.)

Why does my oil pan leak after an oil change?
Each time your car gets an oil change, the oil drain plug is removed and reinstalled. Because the plug is removed and reinstalled so often, the threads can stretch and the gasket can become worn so that it becomes the source of a leak. Sometimes, to fix the leak, y ou may need to replace the drain plug with a new one and/or install a new gasket.
What to do when oil comes out of drain plug?
Position an oil waste pan beneath the oil drain plug. Use a large enough pan to catch the initial pressurized arc of oil that comes out, before the flow stabilizes and streams straight down.
Can a compression plug be replaced on an oil pan?
You can get by with a compression plug that will deform a rubber gasket and seal off the drain hole, but that’s a temporary fix at best. Replacing the entire oil pan is a whole different level of complexity, especially if it involves removing a frame crossmember.
