Why do cylinders have two spark plugs?
By having two spark plugs per cylinder, your aircraft engine is more reliable, produces more power, and burns fuel more evenly. And when you combine all three, you get an ultra-reliable engine that keeps you aloft until you decide it’s time to land.
What causes premature spark plug failure?
Overheating. Repeated overheating of the spark plug tip can cause the plug to prematurely fail. Overheating can be caused by many things like pre-ignition and a malfunctioning cooling system. Pre-ignition can lead to heat building up in the combustion chamber causing the spark plugs to fail.
What happens to an engine if a coil stops working?
For vehicles that use a single ignition coil as the source of spark for all of the cylinders, a faulty coil will affect the operation of the entire engine. If the coil fails completely, it will leave the engine without spark, which will result in a no spark, no-start condition.
What causes a spark plug to blow out?
A loose spark plug, especially one that is held in above with an ignition coil can vibrate and damage aluminum threads. It actually would do less damage if it were allowed to back on out without being held by the coil. So a loose spark plug is the most common cause of a spark plug blowout.
What should I do if my spark plug blows out on my Ford truck?
To remove and re-torque the heads, most Ford technicians do a “cab off” or “body off” operation. On trucks the cab is unbolted from the frame; on SUV’s and vans the entire body is unbolted from the frame, the electrical wiring, AC lines, radiator hoses, heater hoses, master cylinder, etc. are disconnected.
Are there threads in the spark plug hole?
This is a known problem with this engine and Ford/Mercury has a technical bulletin for installing an insert into the spark plug hole. You may not think that you don’t have a loss of threads in the hole, but you do. The heads only have about 4 threads for the spark plug hole.
What’s the best way to start a spark plug?
Using a 3/8″ rubber fuel hose over one end makes starting a spark plug without damaging the threads a lot easier. It allows enough flexibility to line up properly and will prevent “force starting” which can easily damage the threads.
