Should a starter Bendix be lubricated?
Oil should never be used, because oil in that location collects dust and dirt, becoming gummy and causing the Bendix Drive to stick. After the Bendix Drive has been thoroughly cleaned and blown dry with compressed air, lubricate the screwshaft threads and ratchet with a silicone spray.
How do you lubricate a solenoid?
You should not use grease at all in the solenoid. Any grease or oil will turn too thick for a starter solenoid when it’s getting cold outside and it is enough to get it locked up. If you use a liquid, WD-40 at most.
What is the starter Bendix?
The Bendix system places the starter drive pinion on a helical drive spring. When the starter motor begins turning, the inertia of the drive pinion assembly causes it to wind the spring forcing the length of the spring to change, and allowing the pinion to engage with the ring gear.

Starter ring gears are attached to either the flywheel or the flexplate of an engine. The teeth of the ring gear are driven by the smaller gear (known as the pinion) of the starter motor. The pinion engages the starter ring only during starting and once the engine is running the pinion withdraws.

You need a thin grease that just stays on as grease, but not runs down as oil. Normal Tripple Guard grease and similar gets to hard and may prevent the pinion movement. WD 40 works first time, then is gone. I’ll second that by Haffiman.
Do you put Moly grease on a new starter?
Yes, always on a new starter you should get a small brush and put a good layer of moly grease on the pinion. It’s not done during assembly simply as a way to save money because it won’t cause problems in the short term.
Do you need to grease the ring gears?
Nissan products especially seem to eat ring gears, lube from the factory would have saved so many people so much money. No lube required; they are only engaged for a few seconds till motor starts. Adding grease or any other wet lube WILL attract dirt and debris and do premature wear to gears.
What kind of lubrication should I use for my starter?
Look online, maybe Flea-bay. It’ll be expensive and maybe hard to find just one tube, but one tube will last the life of the engine. My buddy that rebuilds starters and alternators. used white spray on lithium grease when he did my starter I’m not saying that’s the correct stuff to use, But starter still going strong 5 yrs later…
