Can I leave OBD2 scanner plugged in?
Many OBD devices keep the CEM awake by sending it a special message at regular intervals. Many others sense when the car is shut down, and stop doing this. My ObdKey device is like this, I can leave it plugged in 24×7 no issues.
Is OBD2 always on?
The connector will always have power on these two pins regardless of the key position, and when you plug a device into the port it will have power and may come on by itself (many scanners do this). However, this is only power and you won’t be able to communicate with the car.
Can a car be harmed by using the OBD-2 diagnostic port?
The car did not start on the first attempt but it did on the fourth. There was also low fuel in the tank which could have caused the bad start but probably not the “engine error” light (this light then disappeared). My question is simple – can there be harm caused to any car or its electronics in general by using the OBD-2 diagnostic port?
Are there any OBD2 scanners that support all cars?
I also found that despite obd2 scanners claiming to support all cars, it’s usually not the case. FAct is, few models support manufacturer obd2 codes. Rest are generic obd ii pids. However the obd ii software by TOAD-pro supports lots of obd2 fault code pid’s.
Can you clear a code with an OBD2 scanner?
With a code reader you can easily clear codes and turn off the “check engine” light, but you will however not be able to check for readiness and may fail to get a sticker in case your vehicle finds itself at the DMV’s office. Ask for Help If You Don’t Understand a Code Given By an OBD2 Scanner
Is it safe to plug in an OBD reader?
That’s not to say you shouldn’t approach this with caution, as you can still do some lasting damage, for example, setting the ignition timing so far advanced that it causes detonation, which can destroy the engine. Stick to graphical apps and the retail OBD readers are very safe. I just plugged in my elm327 and it blew up my jeep.
