What is AT and T syntax?
In AT syntax the size of memory operands is determined from the last character of the instruction mnemonic. Mnemonic suffixes of b, w, l and q specify byte (8-bit), word (16-bit), long (32-bit) and quadruple word (64-bit) memory references.
Why does GCC use AT?
When x86 support was added to the GNU compiler (GCC) it generated AT syntax assembly because that was the assembler they were using. When GAS was created sometime after this, the GNU assembler had to use that syntax. However there was no version of the AT assembler for ARM CPUs.
What opcode syntax do NASM and Fasm use?
NASM and FASM use Intel syntax, and Intel syntax is what the Bochs debugger will provide you when debugging your kernel.
What is x86 code?
x86 assembly language is a family of backward-compatible assembly languages, which provide some level of compatibility all the way back to the Intel 8008 introduced in April 1972. x86 assembly languages are used to produce object code for the x86 class of processors.
What is the difference between AT syntax and Intel syntax when writing x86 assembly?
The direction of the operands in Intel syntax is opposite from that of AT syntax. In Intel syntax the first operand is the destination, and the second operand is the source whereas in AT syntax the first operand is the source and the second operand is the destination.
Is Nasm Intel syntax?
GAS uses the AT syntax, a relatively archaic syntax that is specific to GAS and some older assemblers, whereas NASM uses the Intel syntax, supported by a majority of assemblers such as TASM and MASM.
What assembler does GCC use?
GNU Assembler
The GNU Assembler, commonly known as gas or simply as, its executable name, is the assembler used by the GNU Project. It is the default back-end of GCC. It is used to assemble the GNU operating system and the Linux kernel, and various other software. It is a part of the GNU Binutils package.
Is NASM better than gas?
NASM actually uses its own variation of Intel syntax, different from the MASM syntax used in Intel’s official documentation. In terms of functionality NASM and GAS are pretty much the same. Both have assembler macro facilities, though NASM’s is more extensive and more mature.
What is difference between NASM and MASM?
NASM can generate raw binary format, which saves an objcopy step if you use gas. Both can be used to generate boot sector and code that can call or be called by gcc C/C++. MASM is still maintained and used for compiling assembly with Visual Studio. It’s also used internally within Microsoft.
How does Intel syntax work with at & T syntax?
.intel_syntaxselects Intel mode, and .att_syntaxswitches back to the usual AT mode for compatibility with the output of gcc. Either of these directives may have an optional argument, prefix, or noprefixspecifying whether registers require a %prefix.
How are memory operands determined in at & T syntax?
In AT syntax the size of memory operands is determined from the last character of the instruction mnemonic. Mnemonic suffixes of b, w, land qspecify byte (8-bit), word (16-bit), long (32-bit) and quadruple word (64-bit) memory references.
What’s the difference between at & T and Intel operands?
Notable differences between the two syntaxes are: AT immediate operands are preceded by $; Intel immediate operands are undelimited (Intel push 4is AT pushl $4). AT register operands are preceded by %; Intel register operands are undelimited.
