Should stems be mono or stereo?
First, make sure every stem is a stereo file. Even mono sources like a kick drum stem should be rendered as one stereo file even though the left and right sides will be identical. Next, make sure each file is consolidated to the exact same length.
Should you bounce stems in mono?
PLEASE DO NOT MAKE MONO TRACKS for any stems including the kick and bass. Include all buss processing that is on the stems that you are bouncing. If making multiple synths stems, you MUST bounce each part out with it’s respective effects on.

- Open your Mixer,
- Select all channel strips that have their outputs set to Stereo Out.
- Change their output to an unused bus.
- Make sure the input format of the Aux that Logic creates to receive that bus is mono, and make sure its output is set to the Stereo out.
Should stems be in WAV or MP3?
Why stems are better than a single MP3 or WAV file MP3’s are not industry standard and won’t even get you close to a level of quality similar to what you hear on the radio. Simply because the quality of MP3 files are poor.

Which is better to record in mono or stereo?
One great reason to record in mono is that the overheads will sound much punchier in your mix. We’re not saying that stereo overheads don’t sound punchy. However, when it comes to getting stereo separation and clarity in a mix, it’s much easier to have your mono overheads up the middle and other instruments panned wide.

Dialogue, music and sound effects, called “D-M-E”, are brought to the final mix as separate stems. Using stem mixing, the dialogue can easily be replaced by a foreign language version, the effects can easily be adapted to different mono, stereo and surround systems, and the music can be changed to fit the desired emotional response.
Can you play a kick drum in mono?
You should keep your individual drum hits in mono if possible, especially the kick drum, though you should also use stereo effects or panning decisions to create width and separation in your sound to add more variety to your mix.
