What controls the level of a microphone signal at the input of the DAW interface?
Interfaces come with inputs with preamps and these are designed to amplify input signals from low level (or ‘mic level’) devices, such as dynamic microphones or acoustic pickups. The preamp boosts the signal to what is called ‘line level’ – the signal strength required by your DAW to record.
What is the best level to record audio?
The dynamic range of an audio track is the range of decibel levels that fall between the distortion ceiling and the noise floor. The dynamic range of a vocal recording should peak at -10dB and be lowest at -24dB (best level is -18dB).
What dB should master be?
How loud should your master be? Shoot for about -23 LUFS for a mix, or -6db on an analog meter. For mastering, -14 LUFS is the best level for streaming, as it will fit the loudness targets for the majority of streaming sources. With these targets, you’re good to go!
