Can you use XLR for line level?
The standard XLR 3-pin output connector on most mics can carry mic-level signals or line-level signals. The 1/4″ connectors are used for low-level guitar outputs as well as speaker inputs from a power amp, which are drastically different levels.
Are XLR cables balanced or unbalanced?
XLR and TRS cables are used to transmit balanced audio from one balanced device to another. Unbalanced cables are less complicated, but they’re much more susceptible to noise problems.
Are 1/4 inch cables balanced?
Balanced cables can also be 1/4″ as well. They are often refereed to as TRS or tip, ring, sleeve. In the image below, all the cables on the left are balanced.

Is the TRS cable the same as the XLR cable?
A TRS to XLR is a balanced cable, however TRS isn’t the same as TS which is an unbalanced connection and what a lot of instruments will put out.
Can a XLR be used as a line level pickup?
Typically these come with those new jacks that will take either an XLR or a 1/4-inch. But “line level” is not the same as what a guitar pickup puts out. Pickups are very high impedance (a synth, an iPod, the output of an electronic drum set, or a Line 6 POD is more likely to be line level).
Can a XLR be plugged into a di?
You don’t want long unbalanced low level lines-they are prone to picking up noise and hum. When you plug your guitar, keyboard etc into a DI, it provides the correct output level and impedance and makes it a balanced output so you can use an XLR to plug into a mic input on the mixing console.
