Does Red oak need grain filler?
Red oak is an open-pored wood, called ring porous in technical terms, and has many fairly regular openings across its face. Generally, if you look at the surface of a wood and cannot see the pores, then you don’t need, or want, a filler for that wood.

What happens when you put topcoat on red oak?
Note, however that the topcoat will usually darken the stain somewhat, so be careful not to go too dark. If you don’t wait for the stain to dry thoroughly, the next coat of stain will act as a solvent and actually lighten the finish instead of darkening it.
