Is sanding sealer dewaxed shellac?
Many people use nothing but a coat of dewaxed shellac as a sanding sealer. cut of crystal-clear dewaxed shellac, is one of the most lauded products in this category. It works great for sealing raw wood and as a barrier coat between two possibly incompatible finishes – like an oil-based stain and a waterborne top coat.
Is shellac the same as sanding sealer?
Dewaxed shellac is often considered to be a universal sanding sealer. If your favorite finish does not have a complementary sealer, dewaxed shellac is a good choice. Sanding a first coat of oil into the wood and wiping off the excess will seal the wood pores.

I’ve asked Rustoleum/Zinsser the pound cut equivalent of both Seal Coat and their regular shellac. They say that’s proprietary and won’t reveal it. Has anyone just experimented and come up with anything?
Do you need to use sanding sealer before staining?
I would like to apply a stain but maple is a timber that is prone to blotching so am considering using a sanding sealer before staining to reduce the potential for blotching. In the past I have used shellac as a prelude to wax finishes but I am worried about how it might react with a final finish of varnish or lacquer (i.e. not wax or oil).
