Can I use shellac under polyurethane?
Working the other direction or when you apply other topcoats over shellac, it is often noted that you should not apply polyurethane over shellac. It is, however, OK to use an oil-based urethane over shellac.
Can you apply polyurethane over dewaxed shellac?
It’d be a crying shame to cover up that old wood with plasticy polyurethane!!! You can wax over shellac, even dewaxed, as the wax will bond to the wax (even the trace amounts) in the shellac. A few good coats of paste wax and you are set. With water rings, they are much easier to repair in a shellac/wax finish.
Do you sand shellac before polyurethane?
I have used poly (oil based, not water) over regular (waxed) shellac without any problems but you must sand/scuff to give it a good physical bond. If you don’t need the amber tone, the Zinsser’s sanding sealer is dewaxed so that’s even better.
Which is better shellac or polyurethane?
If you want to be environmental-friendly and look for a more natural look, then shellac is a suitable choice. If, however, you need a modernistic look to your wood and you want a clear finish, then polyurethane varnish will satisfy your requirements.
Why is my stain coming off when applying polyurethane?
The stain has dried on the surface and the solvents in the poly is wiping off what is on the surface. Had this not happened the poly would have bonded to the stain on the surface instead of the wood and in a couple weeks or months the finish would start pealing off.
Can I use shellac as a sanding sealer?
Many people use nothing but a coat of dewaxed shellac as a sanding sealer. It works great for sealing raw wood and as a barrier coat between two possibly incompatible finishes – like an oil-based stain and a waterborne top coat.
Will stain dry over shellac?
Yes, you can stain over shellac and then seal the stain. That would be known as a “glaze” (color coat trapped between other layers). Oil based or waterborne stain are both compatible with shellac. But you should plan to seal the stain as its binders alone won’t keep it from rubbing off.
Does shellac need a top coat?

Should I use lacquer or polyurethane?
Despite being available in variances, polyurethane is more durable. It is thick and leaves a strong coating. Lacquer is thin and penetrates the wood surface. It is also durable but susceptible to scratches and discoloration after some time.
Should stain coming off when applying polyurethane?
As long as the stain has fully cured, the polyurethane will adhere with no problems. The only time you would want to be concerned is if you over applied the polyurethane or put on several coats.
What kind of finish can dewaxed shellac be used on?
Dewaxed shellac is unusual in being compatible with both water- and oil-based finishes, and in fact is sometimes used as an “adapter” layer between those. It can go over, or under, either. (I’m not sure whether that wide compatibility also includes lacquer and catalysed finishes.)

Are there any polys that do not adhere to shellac?
There are plenty of polys, including practically all waterborne polys, that do not adhere well to shellac containing wax. But even the waterborne polys with adhere to shellac.
