Is it safe to use the grinder without a safety guard?
Cut-off wheels and grinding wheels do break, and they do so spectacularly, sending shrapnel flying off in all directions. Even with safety glasses or goggles, and a face shield, and body protection when appropriate, I won’t use an angle grinder without its wheel guard properly attached.
Do wheel grinders need a machine guard?
Abrasive wheels used on bench and pedestal grinding machines must be equipped with safety guards. The safety guard encloses most of the wheel — covering the flange, spindle end, and nut projection — while allowing maximum exposure of the wheel periphery.
Can I remove the guard on my angle grinder?
The guard assembly consists of the wheel guard with a quick-lock cam latch. The guard attaches to a hub on the grinder’s gear box and covers half of the grinding wheel. It can be adjusted to provide the best safety for your task. The guard can be damaged by dropping the grinder.
What is the main purpose of a grinding wheel guard?
The operator is protected against flying abrasive particles and ground material by the wheel guards, which are an integral part of a machine. Safety glass shields are also provided for additional protection.
What should you not do with a grinder?
DON’T use a wheel on grinders rotating at speeds higher than the MAX RPM marked on the wheel or on grinders that do not show a MAX RPM speed. DON’T use excessive pressure when mounting a wheel. Tighten enough only to hold wheel firmly. DON’T alter a wheel hole or force it on a spindle.
Where should the guard be on an angle grinder?
Position the blade guard at the back towards your body. Use a smooth back and forth motion to guide the flap disc over the material. Let the wheel do the work, but feel free to apply enough pressure to ensure you’re being productive.
Do not use a grinding wheel that is?
Do not force wheels onto a grinder that is the wrong size or change mounting hole sizes. Do not tighten the mounting nut excessively. Do not put the grinder on the floor or working surface until the wheel has stopped turning. Do not use a wheel with a maximum RPM that is lower than the RPM rating of the grinder.
Does OSHA require a handle on a grinder?
A grinding wheel is primarily used to remove scrap metal. OSHA requires several safety guards to be installed on any grinding wheel. According to AM Trust North America, one of OSHA’s most commonly broken rules when it comes to abrasive wheels is the adjustable guard.
What happens when grinding a wheel is chosen with a bond strength that is too hard?
The firmer the grip the harder the grinding wheel will be. What happens to grinding wheels with hard or very hard grades after prolonged use. They will eventually become dull and the wheel takes on a glazed appearance.
Why do grinding wheels explode?
Grinding operations generate tremendous amounts of heat. This heat causes expansion and if foreign materials are embedded in the stone then the differential rate of thermal expansion between the two materials can cause a wheel to shatter.
Why are CBN grinding wheels better than diamonds?
This lack of reaction allows CBN to remove more material and last longer than diamonds when grinding most hard metals. A longer life cycle for your grinding wheel has several advantages: CBN is also better than diamonds for grinding hard metals because it has a very high rate of thermal conductivity.
Can you grind metal with a CBN grinder?
It is possible to grind hard metals with conventional abrasives, but the wheel won’t last very long. For this reason, a CBN grinder is usually a better fit. Consider some of these benefits of using CBN over abrasive grains made of materials like ceramic or silicon carbide.
Can you use cut off wheels on a grinder?
Do not use cut-off wheels on angle grinders without the proper guard. Incorrect: Floorstand grinders that use foundry wheels 24″ and larger, equipped with the old style guards that have not been retrofitted are dangerous.
Is it illegal to take wheel guard off grinding machine?
The removal of a wheel guard on a machine in operation is not only extremely dangerous, but illegal. Using a damaged wheel guard is extremely dangerous to the safety of the operator and bystanders. Guards that are cracked, deformed, bent, or severely worn must be replaced.
