How does a doweling jig work?
How it works. The heart of the jig is a steel block with holes to guide your drill bit. On many models, the holes are threaded, which lets you install bushings for drill bits of various sizes. The holes are precisely perpendicular and located in the exact center of the block.
How long should dowels be?
Choose a dowel that is a 1/3 to 1/2 as thick as the thickness of the wood. For example, if you’re working with a board that is 3/4″ thick your dowel size should be about 5/16.” The length the dowel should be twice as long as the thickness of the wood.
Is a dowel jig necessary?
Not to worry. You don’t need one. There are a couple of different ways that you can approach this unique problem. In this article, we’re going to cover two different ways to make perfect dowel holes without a jig, one’s a little fancier than the other, but we’ll get to that as we go along.

Butt the pieces together one at a time, and clamp them all at the end with bar clamps. If you prefer to work a little slower, you can glue up a couple at a time, and then join the larger pieces later.

Mark and drill the location of your first set of holes, then place the dowel centers in the holes and bring the mating pieces together. Just make sure when you bring the parts together they are aligned with each other exactly how you want them to fit together.
What do you need to know about dowel joinery?
Keep your expansive dowels in a sealed container to stop moisture from getting to them. When drilling holes for dowels, make sure to size them small enough so that there is enough material on either side of the hole. This ensures that the joinery does not blow out the sides of your piece.
How to make edge to face dowel joints?
To make edge-to-face joints, start by drilling dowel holes along one edge as described in the previous section. Drill the holes deep enough to make the protruding dowels at least 3 ⁄16 ” shorter than the thickness of the mating piece.
Why is there no movement between the dowel pieces?
Biscuits, by their nature, have a lot of movement both vertically and horizontally before the glue sets. While extra clamps can take care of this, the rush of assembly sometimes causes us to fail to line up our pieces. Dowels allow no movement between the mating pieces, taking one more variable out of always-hectic assemblies.
