Why is it not good to return null?
The rationale behind not returning null is that you do not have to check for it and hence your code does not need to follow a different path based on the return value. You might want to check out the Null Object Pattern which provides more information on this.
Is it bad design to return NULL in a collection?
Collection c = getItems (); // Could potentially return null. // Two possible code paths now so harder to test. if (c != null) { for (Item item : c) { // Process item. } } Here’s the reason. In Clean Code by Robert Martin he writes that returning null is bad design when you can instead return, say, empty array.
When to return an empty pointer or null?
The idea here is that on error, you return an empty/blank version of whatever object type you would return normally. An empty array or string would work for those cases, for instance. Returning “NULL” is appropriate when you would normally return a pointer (since NULL is essentially an empty pointer).
How to fix null stack overflow in Laravel?
If you rename the users.user_id to users.id then everything will work without any changes at all. I had suffered from the same issue and the reason was there was a whitespace after the column which would be used as relation. Simply deleting it solved.
What happens when a property is null in PowerShell?
If you try to access a property on a $null value, that the property is also $null. The count property is the exception to this rule. When you have a $null value, then the count is 0. This special property is added by PowerShell. Almost all objects in PowerShell have that count property.
What happens when you call a method on a null object?
If you try to access a property or sub property of an object that doesn’t have the specified property, you get a $null value like you would for an undefined variable. It doesn’t matter if the variable is $null or an actual object in this case. Calling a method on a $null object throws a RuntimeException.
When to throw null or check against Null?
For certain scenarios, you want to notice a failure as soon as it happens. Checking against NULL and not asserting (for programmer errors) or throwing (for user or caller errors) in the failure case can mean that later crashes are harder to track down, because the original odd case wasn’t found.
Where can I find the null object pattern?
The Null Object Pattern is described in the Gang of Four’s Design Patterns book. The intent of the pattern is to identify behavior that should occur when a null is encountered and encapsulate it using a static constant. Let’s expand on the previous Blog class example:
What happens if there is no null value in tableau?
Tableau reads through each condition until one is True, and then returns that value. If no conditions are True then Tableau will return the value in the ELSE statement. If there is no ELSE statement, then Tableau will return NULL.
Why are NULL parameter checks important in unit testing?
If you make your tests short, expressive and easy to read, your tests will have much higher value: not only the safety net for classes, but also nice documentation which is easy to use and support.
How to fix nullreferenceexception when unit testing controller?
Instead, just run the test under debugger. This is such a kind of exception that anyone who can develop software in principle will immediately see the problem when the code is run under debugger. Remember: you need to fix functionality, not the test.
