How to save values on Arduino with EEPROM?
First, you have to include the EEPROM library at the top of your file. We write here 2 values in the EEPROM memory: Now, the values are stored, and even if you reboot your Arduino board with a totally different program, those values will still be here, at the addresses 0 and 3.
How much data can you store on an EEPROM?
The EEPROM is very limited. While a hard drive can store up to several terabytes of data, you can only store a few bytes, sometimes kilobytes on the EEPROM. Not all Arduino boards have EEPROM. On Arduino Uno and Mega, you have 1024 bytes, but if you have an Arduino Zero, you have no EEPROM available.
How big is the EEPROM on the Arduino Uno?
This can be solved by storing the current address for instance at the start of the EEPROM and start writing actual data after that. The EEPROM size on the Arduino Uno is 1024 bytes, so in our case we would would need to use 2 bytes to store this metadata.
What kind of memory does an Arduino have?
The microcontrollers used on most of the Arduino boards have either 512, 1024 or 4096 bytes of EEPROM memory built into the chip. This memory is non-volatile, which means that the data doesn’t get erased when the board loses power. You can look at the EEPROM on Arduino as an array where each element is one byte.
How to write a byte of memory to the EEPROM?
Writing a byte of memory to the EEPROM generally happens in three steps: Send the Most Significant Byte of the memory address that you want to write to. Send the Least Significant Byte of the memory address that you want to write to. Send the data byte that you would like to store at this location.
When to use eeprom.update ( ) instead of write ( )?
Update a value. The EEPROM.update() function is particularly useful. It only writes on the EEPROM if the value written is different from the one already saved. As the EEPROM has limited life expectancy due to limited write/erase cycles, using the EEPROM.update() function instead of the EEPROM.write() saves cycles.
Is there a limit to the number of EEPROM?
To many newcomers, the 100,000 limit seems to be a very large number, but the reality can be very different. Anything that reduces the activity (any activity) for the EEPROM is, basically, a good idea and should be incorporated within the program wherever possible.
