How does class activation map work?
Class Activation Maps (CAM) is a powerful technique used in Computer Vision for classification tasks. It allows the scientist to inspect the image to be categorized and understand which parts/pixels of that image have contributed more to the final output of the model.
What is class activation mapping?
Class activation mapping is a method to generate heatmaps of images that show which areas were of high importance in terms of a neural networks for image classification. There are several variations on the method including Score-CAM and Grad-CAM (Gradient Weighted Class Activation Mapping).
What is an activation map CNN?
Class activation maps are a simple technique to get the discriminative image regions used by a CNN to identify a specific class in the image. In other words, a class activation map (CAM) lets us see which regions in the image were relevant to this class.
Why do we need a class activation map?
In other words, a class activation map (CAM) lets us see which regions in the image were relevant to this class. The authors of the paper show that this also allows re-using classifiers for getting good localization results, even when training without bounding box coordinates data.
How to visualize class activation maps in deep learning?
One way you can do that is to debug your model and visually validate that it is “looking” and “activating” at the correct locations in an image. To help deep learning practitioners debug their networks, Selvaraju et al. published a novel paper entitled, Grad-CAM: Visual Explanations from Deep Networks via Gradient-based Localization.
How to visualize class activation maps with Grad-Cam?
The output of Grad-CAM is a heatmap visualization for a given class label (either the top, predicted label or an arbitrary label we select for debugging). We can use this heatmap to visually verify where in the image the CNN is looking.
How to visualize class activation maps with Keras?
From there, we’ll dive into Grad-CAM, an algorithm that can be used visualize the class activation maps of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), thereby allowing you to verify that your network is “looking” and “activating” at the correct locations. We’ll then implement Grad-CAM using Keras and TensorFlow.
