How does PyTorch DataParallel work?
To use data parallelism with PyTorch, you can use the DataParallel class. When using this class, you define your GPU IDs and initialize your network using a Module object with a DataParallel object. Then, when you call your object it can split your dataset into batches that are distributed across your defined GPUs.
What is Distributed Data Parallel?
DistributedDataParallel (DDP) implements data parallelism at the module level which can run across multiple machines. DDP processes can be placed on the same machine or across machines, but GPU devices cannot be shared across processes.
What is rank in DDP?
rank is a unique id for each process in the group . So in your example, world_size is 4 and rank for the processes is [0,1,2,3] . Sometimes, we could also have local_rank argument, it means the GPU id inside one process. For example, rank=1 and local_rank=1 , it means the second GPU in the second process.
Is PyTorch distributed?
The distributed package included in PyTorch (i.e., torch. distributed ) enables researchers and practitioners to easily parallelize their computations across processes and clusters of machines. To do so, it leverages message passing semantics allowing each process to communicate data to any of the other processes.
How does distributed data parallelism in PyTorch work?
DistributedDataParallel (DDP) implements data parallelism at the module level which can run across multiple machines. Applications using DDP should spawn multiple processes and create a single DDP instance per process. DDP uses collective communications in the torch.distributed package to synchronize gradients and buffers.
Which is faster distributeddataparallel or torch.nn.dataparallels?
DistributedDataParallel is proven to be significantly faster than torch.nn.DataParallel for single-node multi-GPU data parallel training. To use DistributedDataParallel on a host with N GPUs, you should spawn up N processes, ensuring that each process exclusively works on a single GPU from 0 to N-1.
What’s the difference between distributed data parallel and Dataparallel?
First, DataParallel is single-process, multi-thread, and only works on a single machine, while DistributedDataParallel is multi-process and works for both single- and multi- machine training.
Can you use Dataparallel wrapped model in PyTorch?
But in most cases, you can just treat a DistributedDataParallel wrapped model, a DataParallel wrapped model and an ordinary model on a single GPU as the same (E.g. using the same learning rate for equivalent batch size). Parameters are never broadcast between processes.
