Can we join tables with null values?
A join that displays only the rows that have a match in both joined tables. Columns containing NULL do not match any values when you are creating an inner join and are therefore excluded from the result set. Null values do not match other null values.
How do I join two tables with null values in SQL?
Since it’s not possible to join on NULL values in SQL Server like you might expect, we need to be creative to achieve the results we want. One option is to make our AccountType column NOT NULL and set some other default value. Another option is to create a new column that will act as a surrogate key to join on instead.
Can you join on NULL values in SQL?
The result of a join of null with any other value is null. Because null values represent unknown or inapplicable values, Transact-SQL has no basis to match one unknown value to another. You can detect the presence of null values in a column from one of the tables being joined only by using an outer join.
Can we join NULL values using join operation?
As we have seen from the above examples joining NULL values does not work. Even though you have two NULL values SQL Server does not treat these as the same value. Internally a value of NULL is an unknown value and therefore SQL Server does not equate an unknown value being equal to another unknown value.
IS NULL with left join?
The SQL LEFT JOIN returns all rows from the left table, even if there are no matches in the right table. This means that if the ON clause matches 0 (zero) records in the right table; the join will still return a row in the result, but with NULL in each column from the right table.

Why are null values allowed in the join clause?
By allowing NULL values you introduce other issues that you may need to face at a later time. Although the ISNULL function is handy, if you are doing large joins having this function in the join clause will slow down the query. A lot of this will also depend on the indexes you have setup and how the indexes are used for the join.
Do you have to do null checks in joins?
Ideally the design of the relationships and tables should prevent you having to do null checks in joins and the majority of the time a simple left join would do most of what you want. Could you can use constraints and ISNULLs when the data is being added to ensure its integrity?
