Are all SSN 9 digits?
In November 1936, the first SSNs were issued by these typing centers and thousands of people were given their 9-digit number. In 1972, after computer-based systems became available, all SSNs were issued exclusively from the central Social Security Administration (SSA) office in Baltimore, Maryland.
The first three digits are known as the “area number”. Until June 25, 2011, this is generally the State or territory where your SSN was assigned….The first three digits of a Social Security Number correspond to locations as follows:

How do I get a new whole Social Security number?
People who want to ask for a new Social Security number must:
- Apply in person at a Social Security office;
- Complete an application;
- Provide a statement explaining the reasons for needing a new number;
- Provide current, credible, third-party evidence documenting the reasons for needing a new number; and.
Can you do anything with the last 4 digits of a Social Security number?

Will we run out of SSN?
