Can a helicopter pilot fly any helicopter?
You can legally fly ANY type of helicopter, including turbine (jet) engine-powered helicopters or multi-engine helicopters up to a gross weight of 12,500 lbs. To safely fly a different size or type of helicopter, however, will usually require some additional training in that aircraft.
What is a transport category helicopter?
Transport category is a category of airworthiness applicable to large civil airplanes and large civil helicopters. A principle behind transport category design standards is that any element in an airplane or helicopter can fail, but the risk of such a failure causing an accident should be extremely low.
Is it hard to land a helicopter?
For helicopters, a hard landing can occur after mechanical or engine damage or failure when the rotor(s) are still intact and free to turn. Autorotation, in which airflow over the rotors keeps them turning and provides some lift, can allow limited pilot control during descent.
What is large transport category airplanes?
Transport Category is applicable to large civil aeroplanes and large civil helicopters. Transport category aircraft include: Jet powered aeroplanes with 10 or more seats or with a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) greater than 5,670 kg (12,500 lb) Helicopters with a MTOW greater than 3,175 kg (7,000 lb)
What do you need to know about helicopter operations?
HOLD FOR (reason- takeoff clearance, release, landing/taxiing aircraft, etc.). Air‐taxi is the preferred method for helicopter movements on airports provided ground operations/conditions permit. Air‐taxi authorizes the pilot to proceed above the surface either via hover‐taxi or flight at speeds more than 20 knots.
What’s the best way to land a helicopter?
CAUTION (wake turbulence or other reasons above). HOLD FOR (reason- takeoff clearance, release, landing/taxiing aircraft, etc.). Air‐taxi is the preferred method for helicopter movements on airports provided ground operations/conditions permit.
When does a helicopter need to make a simultaneous landing?
A preceding, departing helicopter has left the landing area. (See FIG 3-11-5 .) Authorize helicopters to conduct simultaneous landings or takeoffs if the distance between the landing or takeoff points is at least 200 feet and the courses to be flown do not conflict.
What does it mean when a helicopter is taxiing?
Helicopters performing air‐taxiing operations within the boundary of the airport are considered to be taxiing aircraft. A preceding, departing helicopter has left the takeoff area.
