You cannot get the simple HDMI to VGA cable, there is no way this kind of cable will work with the Raspberry Pi. What we need is HDMI to VGA converter with inbuilt converter chip in it and with audio output too. This way you can always connect your speaker and monitor in one connection, very handy.
Why does my monitor go black when I plug it in?
When I plug in the monitor (to VGA port), it is detected but the display blinks on and goes black immediately. I have to unplug and re-plug up to 12 times and finally the monitor comes on and stays on until the power option tells the monitors to go blank.
