Can a recursive function have a loop?
All iterative loops can be made into recursive functions. However, not ALL recursive functions can be iterative loops, or they are at least VERY complex. You won’t find recursion in simple applications. However, they can be particularly useful in mathematical programming, searching algorithms and compilers.
Can a recursive function go infinite loop?
Base case and recursive case Something you have to look out for when writing a recursive function is an infinite loop. This is when the function keeps calling itself… and never stops calling itself! }countdown(5); // This is the initial call to the function. This function will keep counting down forever.
Is while recursive?
Is a while loop intrinsically a recursion? then, yes, a while loop is a form of recursion. Recursive functions are another form of recursion (another example of recursive definition). Lists and trees are other forms of recursion.
Can a recursion be converted into an iterative function?
Recursion is implemented as stacks or similar constructs in the actual interpreters or compilers. So you certainly can convert a recursive function to an iterative counterpart because that’s how it’s always done (if automatically). You’ll just be duplicating the compiler’s work in an ad-hoc and probably in a very ugly and inefficient manner.
Can you use loops in a recursive function?
You surely can use loops in a recursive function. What makes a function recursive is only the fact that the function calls itself at some point in its execution path. However you should have some condition to prevent infinite recursion calls from which your function can’t return.
Can a recursive algorithm be expressed as an iterative algorithm?
Any recursive algorithm can be expressed as an iterative algorithm, but you may need to keep an explicit stack (corresponding to the call stack that’s handled implicitly). After all, if you compile a recursive function, you get something that relies on manipulating a stack and looping through the function, and that’s iterative.
Is it possible to remove recursion from a function?
Removing recursion is a complex problem and is feasible under well defined circumstances. Appart from the explicit stack, another pattern for converting recursion into iteration is with the use of a trampoline. Here, the functions either return the final result, or a closure of the function call that it would otherwise have performed.
