Can a Word doc be a link?
Besides being able to link information from other Windows applications into your document, you can link other Word documents to your current document. Position the insertion point where you want the document inserted and linked. Choose File from the Insert menu. Word displays the Insert File dialog box.
How do I enable hyperlinks?

I have no other problem clicking links elsewhere to open automatically — in Chrome webpages, in a PDF document viewed in a PDF program (PDF-XChange Editor), no problems elsewhere. BTW, neither do the links open with Internet Explorer… they are essentially dead links. So why only Thunderbird messages?
We were having the same issue for SharePoint links to shared drives. Was able to fix by using the ‘IE Tab’ extension installed on Chrome and Edge. Provided users instructions on how to configure the IE tab to automatically open using the “Auto URLs” setting in the extension.
What to do if Word document only opens in browser?
A quick repair should reset the association right. Press Windows key, hold it and press r to open Run window. Restart your computer once Quick repair is finished. Let me know the outcome. If above doesn’t work, you can set association correct.
Are there any links that work in chrome?
