Can ceramic capacitors be used in AC circuits?
A ceramic capacitor uses a ceramic material as the dielectric. Ceramic capacitors are also very small in size and have a low maximum rated voltage. They are not polarized, which means that they may be safely connected to an AC source.
Can capacitors be used in series?
When capacitors are connected one after another, they are said to be in series. For capacitors in series, the total capacitance can be found by adding the reciprocals of the individual capacitances, and taking the reciprocal of the sum.
How to calculate an AC rating for a 630vdc capacitor?
Therefore, a 630Vdc rated MLCC would have the following correlated AC rating: Obtain an AC voltage rating from a DC rated MLCC by substituting the peak to peak voltage (Vpp) for the capacitor’s rated voltage and solve for Vrms. Is it better to put capacitors in series or series?
You can put capacitors in series, but that rarely works out better than getting the right cap in the first place. As Steven said, two of the same caps in series have double the voltage rating but half the capacitance. You also have to be careful that the DC level of the node between the caps is at about 1/2 the voltage.

Is the reliability of ceramic capacitors affected by core temperature?
Essentially, this point is true; however, long term reliability is affected by the net temperature effect. Therefore, raising the product’s core temperature has to be carefully considered. For proper calculation of the AC current rating, one must know several parameters. TDK Ceramic Capacitor Division © TDK-EPC 2015
