Can HDMI support 2560×1440?
It won’t work because HDMI doesn’t have enough bandwidth to power 2560×1440. HDMI 1.4 is SUPPOSED to have the bandwidth for 2560×1440. Ok you will be able to run the monitor via HDMI 1.4 cable but you will face problems for sure as 1440p displays are not really intended to run via HDMI.

Apple advises that macOS Catalina will run on the following Macs: MacBook models from early 2015 or later. MacBook Air models from mid-2012 or later. MacBook Pro models from mid-2012 or later.
Can a Dell U2711 display 2560 x 1440?
The U2711 can display 2560 x 1440 via HDMI IF your graphics card and driver (and cable) can handle it. You can create a custom resolution or edit the EDID file. In short, it appears that Dell regards HDMI to be for ‘Video’ only and as such, considers 1080p (i.e. 1920 x 1080) to be the maximum and thus ‘native’ resolution for HDMI.
Is there a maximum resolution for HDMI to U2711?
Re: HDMI to U2711. Toojays, you are correct regarding the stated maximum resolution, as mentioned in my post 18/6/11 3:12 above. In other words, Dell has stated in its documentation that the maximum possible resolution via HDMI is 1080p (i.e. 1920 x 1080) which is what has caused a lot of the confusion.
Why is the HDMI not working on the Dell U2711?
Consequently, some people understood that Dell had somehow restricted the input of the HDMI port; however, Dell subsequently confirmed that the U2711’s HDMI port is passive and does not restrict the input signal.
What’s the maximum resolution of a Dell monitor?
That’s all the links in the chain except for the driver’s view of what’s acceptable to the monitor. The starting problem is that Dell see HDMI as a Video mode and thus the U2711’s EDID file states a maximum HDMI resolution of 1920 x 1080 (which is why it doesn’t initially allow 2560 x 1440).
