Can high beams work if low beams dont?
High beam headlights don’t work or low beams don’t work. The cause: A burned out bulb, or a problem with the high beam switch or relay. The fix: Replace the bulb, switch, or relay.
Why would high beams work but not the low beams?
Headlight Fuse or Relay These are designed to ‘blow’ and break the circuit if too much power comes through them. Most headlight systems are also designed with a relay that switches the power between low beam and high beam headlights. If this relay goes bad, it could allow power to the high beams, but not the low beams.
Why do high beams work but low beams don’t?
This is the most common reason we see for why a car’s high beam headlights work but the low beams don’t. The normal headlights are on far more often than the high beams, so the low beams burn out more frequently. Some vehicles have entirely different bulbs for the high beams, and other models have headlights with two different filaments.
What are the wires on a high beam light?
The bulb modules could actually be bad, despite both filaments coming on in high beam mode. Pull the connector at each bulb, there will be three wires: tan, green and black. The black is ground, tan is low and green is high. Make sure there is power on the tan wire when the headlights are on and the high/low switch is set to low.
Is it safe to drive with high beams on?
No one wants to be driving along at night and have their headlights go out. In many cases, the high beams will still work when the regular headlights stop, but it’s just not safe to drive around with your high beams potentially blinding other drivers.
What to do when low beam headlights come on?
If the low beams come on when bypassing the switch, replace the switch. To get at the screws/bolts holding the switch to the column, you might need to remove the lower dash and drop the column. The lower dash comes out if you remove all the screws (you have to take the ashtray out to get at one), open the glovebox and gently pull.
