Can I power 5V with 12v?
So now you know you can get 12V DC from 5V DC but as you increased the voltage, the output current must reduce to respect conservation principle. So in reality you can extract very limited amount of power from your converter.
Can I use PSU fan as case fan?
So the quick answer is yes you can use fans from PSUs in your case. Bear in mind that most fans found in PSUs are cheap and noisy – and will need to have some work performed to fit them onto a molex header. Most old PSU’s have brushless fans unsuitable for long term reliable usage.
Do you need 12V or 5V in a PSU?
In my projects, generally i need 12V, 5V and 3V. Because of this i did not add variable voltage, voltage screen or other outputs on the PSU (-12V) etc. I planned to avoid the time losses in future projects by taking different outputs (USB, Banana jack, spring loaded wire terminals) for 12V and 5V.
What kind of power supply does a PSU use?
Older PSUs will mainly utilize the 3.3V and 5V rails, with excess current being handled by the 12V rail. Newer versions will use the 12V rail as their main output. Drill the holes you need to mount your binding posts, LEDs, and main switch. Cut your wires and group them by color.
What’s the difference between 5 and 12 volt power supply?

If possible, it should be done this after completely removing the circuit board for without spilling metal shavings on the circuit board.
