Can I Relicense my software?
There’s no way you can rescind the GPL on the software you have already given someone. The only way that license is allowed to be changed is to a newer version of the GPL. Whoever received it as GPL will always be free to use it and redistribute it to others under the GPL.
Can I relicense MIT to GPL?
The MIT license is compatible with many copyleft licenses, such as the GNU General Public License (GPL); MIT licensed software can be integrated with GPL software. MIT-licensed software can be used within proprietary software, which distinguishes it from copyleft software licenses.
Can I change license from GPL?
As a copyright holder, you do not have to choose between licensing your project under the GPL, and re-licensing at a later date. Once a piece of software is licensed under the GPL, it is always under the GPL. However, as a copyright holder, you may re-license under other licenses as well, if you so please.
Is the Apache License 2.0 compatible with the GPL?
This would be incompatible with ASF’s requirement that all Apache software must be distributed under the Apache License 2.0. We avoid GPLv3 software because merely linking to it is considered by the GPLv3 authors to create a derivative work. We want to honor their license.
When does Apache need to be distributed under GPLv3?
This licensing incompatibility applies only when some Apache project software becomes a derivative work of some GPLv3 software, because then the Apache software would have to be distributed under GPLv3. This would be incompatible with ASF’s requirement that all Apache software must be distributed under the Apache License 2.0.
Can you distribute software under the Apache License?
The Apache Software Foundation does not allow its own projects to distribute software under licenses more restrictive than the Apache License, and the Free Software Foundation does not distribute software under the Apache License.
