Can I run 12V LED on 18V?
Voltage wise, a 12v lithium battery will probably work great to just plug right into the led strip. Simply connecting an 18v battery will damage the LEDs in the long run, because they’ll be getting a lot more current than they’re made to handle.
Will a 12V LED work on 24V?
12-volt lights are compatible with 24-volt systems – they use electricity and can be wired into the system. Light bulbs and light strips are designed to operate at slightly lower and slightly higher voltages. The problem with adding them to a 24-volt system is the excess voltage.
How do I know if my LED strip is 12v or 24V?
Cut points: 12v LED strips almost always have half the distance between cut points compared to a 24v strip. e.g., If on a 12v strip the cut points are 50mm apart, then the 24v type would have 100mm spacing. This is because the 12v LED strips are cuttable every 3 LEDs, whereas the 24v types are cuttable every 6 LEDs.
What happens if I supply 18V to a 12V led?
If the resistor isn’t rated for the higher power, it will eventually fail. Failure modes of resistors might be open or short, so once it fails the LED will either be permanently off or have insufficient current limitation, glow very brightly for a brief time, and also fail.
How to get 18V batteries down to 12V?
That is, if the batteries are 2 AH at 18V, the linear regulator will give you something around 2 AH at 12 V. So, you go from great batteries to average batteries in terms of performance per unit weight. My approach would be to disassemble the pack and re-assemble it for 12 volts.
Is there a 6 Port charger for 18V batteries?
Ryobi used to make a 6 port charger for their 18V batteries, don’t know if its still available. You could split off four of the ports for the 12V supply and keep two for recharging batteries. I just found a Ryobi 6 port charger on eBay for $27.
Can a 12V battery be used as a power supply?
That is a good idea to use an old charger base to house the circuitry for making a supply. A simple way to do it would be to use a three terminal regulator set to 13.8 volts. Use a good heatsink on it, and drill holes in the base for ventilation.
