Can varnish be applied directly on wood?
Use a flat paintbrush or foam applicator to apply the varnish to the wood. Use long, even strokes, and work along the wood grain. Let this first coat dry for 24 hours. If you are using a spray on varnish, hold the can 6 to 8 inches away from the surface and spray on a light, even coat.
How do you fix peeling varnish?
If you can see flaking varnish with dark-stained wood underneath, you just need to restore the clear finish. Rub the loose varnish with fine steel wool or fine synthetic steel wool until you have removed the flaking varnish and slightly roughened a small area of the finish surrounding the scratch.
How do you fix worn varnish?
Stage 1 – Lightly sand the partially worn area with a 150 grit sandpaper, vacuum the sanded area to remove all traces of sanding dust and debris. Stage 2 – Apply a thin coat of floor varnish like Manns Extra Tough Floor Varnish or Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish over the worn area, then let it dry.
How many coats of varnish should I apply?
For a very durable finish and one that needs to be very tough, say on a kitchen table, coffee table or end table etc, 2 to 3 coats of varnish should be enough on the top, with 1 to 2 coats on the legs/base. For chairs, benches, chests and other such pieces, 1 to 2 coats should do the trick.
Do you sand the final coat of varnish?
Note: Sanding between coats is not necessary, but it will provide a better finish. After a coat has dried, use 220 or 240 grit sandpaper or extra fine steel wool to lightly sand surface. Sanding produces a white film over the finish, but will disappear as you apply the next coat. Do not sand the final coat.
Why is my varnish peeling off?
Varnish has ultra violet light absorption particles. After a while these particles break down from absorbing the light. Once the break down occurs the varnish yellows and develops cracks allowing moisture to seep into the wood causing the varnish to peel.

Coats 1 through 6 can be your finish varnish or a less expensive formulation, but do not use hardware store varnish. General purpose varnishes are typically too brittle for marine use. In hot weather coats 4 through 9 may require a small amount of thinner to keep the brush from “dragging.”
