Can you connect to the Internet with a static IP address?
Assigning a static IP address to a computer allows it to use the same IP address every time. This is in contrast to having a router assign a dynamic IP address to your computer, where the IP address changes every time you connect and reconnect to the wireless network.

Is it OK to ping Google?
If my experiences are anything to go by, pinging Google is normally quite a good bet, as they design their network to be as fast as possible. Also as ICMP is prioritized, evening peak probably does not make a significant difference – particularly in terms of packet loss – which I’d argue should be 0.
