Why can’t I move a shared folder in Google Drive?
Important: If you select the sharing permission Administrators only in a Team Folder, users won’t be able to move files or folders by drag and drop in Google Drive. This is due to a restriction in Google Drive. They can also move several files and folders in one go in AODocs.
Go to your Google Drive documents.
- Hold Ctrl+A to select all files or manually chose those you want to copy.
- Right-click and select Download. The files will be in a zip format.
- Preserve this copy in a reliable place and extract files whenever needed.
What is the difference between Google Drive and my Drive?
These tabs have their own folder structure, so you can create subfolders to organize your files better. “My Drive” keeps the structure of your computer’s Drive folder, and folders in the “computers” tab have the same structure as the folders on your hard drive that you’ve synced. There are other tabs, as well.

Google Drive uses the folder metaphor, which states that a file exists in one place. So when you drag a file from one folder to another folder, you remove it from one folder and add it to another. All the permissions that the file inherited from the shared folder are lost and all the permissions from the new folder will be inherited.
Unless you are an administrator, you can’t move folders from My Drive into a shared drive, but you can create new folders in a shared drive.
