Can you over tighten pinion nut?
Once you crush a crush sleeve, you cannot “uncrush it”. If you overtighten the pinion nut, you need to remove the pinion and replace the crush sleeve.
How tight should pinion be?
Be careful a quarter turn past optimum is way too tight. You only want 12-20 in. lbs of torque on the free spinning pinion. If you go too tight, the only thing to do is take it apart and crush a new sleeve.
Can you reuse a pinion crush sleeve?
The best way to reuse a crush sleeve is to slide it over a piece of pipe and hit with a hammer to make it longer again. It won’t take as much force to crush it again but will ultimately do the job.
How do you fix a loose pinion bearing preload?
Use an inch-pound torque wrench to check the preload. If the preload is too loose then remove shims so that the bearings will be tighter against the races and increase the preload. If the preload is too tight then remove the pinion gear and add shims so that the bearings will not be as tight against the races.
What size is the pinion nut on GM 10 Bolt?
8.5 and 8.6 INCH
Driveshaft and Driveline Parts > PINION NUTS and WASHERS > GM > GM 10 BOLT – 8.5 and 8.6 INCH with 30 spline pinion.
How do you set pinion depth?
Pinion Depth – The distance from the face of the pinion gear to the centerline of the ring gear. This is adjusted by adding or subtracting shims to the inner pinion bearing.
How do you check pinion preload?
Use an inch-pound torque wrench to check the preload. If the preload is too loose then remove the shims so that the bearings will be tighter against the races and increase the preload. If the preload is too tight, then remove the pinion gear and add shims so that the bearings will not be as tight against the races.
When do you need minimum torque on pinion nut?
If that happens, the pinion usually breaks from heat buildup annealing it. You need a specified minimum torque on the nut to ensure the crush sleeve is still effective [not too short.] You must have the same Total Turning Torque and the minumum tightening torque when you are done. If the TTT is reached before the tightening torque
What happens when you remove a pinion nut?
The pinion nut gets torqued to the point where you have proper preload on the pinion bearings. Marking the nut, measureing the torque when you remove it, doesn’t matter, it won’t work.
Can you change the bearing preload on a pinion nut?
If the new yoke and old yoke are as little as .005 inch different in thickness then your pinion bearing preload will be way off. Torquing the nut will not change the bearing preload.
When to replace crush sleeve on pinion nut?
Lastly if the pinion nut torque required to reach correct preload is less than 180Nm then the crush sleeve should be replaced. In my opinion crush sleeves shuold not be reused unless you absolutely have to. Generally speaking to much preload will overheat and destroy the bearings.
