Can you run a VM in a Docker container?
The answer is a resounding “yes.” At the most basic level VMs are a great place for Docker hosts to run. Whether it’s a vSphere VM or a Hyper-V VM or an AWS EC2 instance, all of them will serve equally well as a Docker host.
Can Linux containers run on Mac?
Previously in order to run Linux containers on a Mac, you needed to install VirtualBox and have an embedded Linux virtual machine that would run the Docker containers from the Mac CLI. You just drag-and-drop the Mac application to /Applications, run it, and the Docker CLI just works.
What is a VM container?
Each VM includes a separate operating system image, which adds overhead in memory and storage footprint. Containers sit on top of a physical server and its host OS—for example, Linux or Windows. Each container shares the host OS kernel and, usually, the binaries and libraries, too.
Is Docker like a VM?
Docker is container based technology and containers are just user space of the operating system. A Virtual Machine, on the other hand, is not based on container technology. They are made up of user space plus kernel space of an operating system. Under VMs, server hardware is virtualized.
Can Mac run Docker natively?
Currently, to use Docker on Mac and Windows requires the use of Docker Toolbox. And since Docker uses Linux-specific tools you can’t run it natively. Instead, you have to use docker-machine and attach to a VirtualBox VM on your system. This VM hosts your Docker.
Why is Docker on macOS so much worse than Linux?
It’s your Host OS’ resources hard at work to synchronize low-level I/O (specifically disk and network) between the Host OS and Containers; this is on top of having to run the Containers themselves. This is also why you see the Hyperkit process usually consuming much of your CPU even at idle.
Can you run Windows and Linux Docker containers at the same time?
With Docker for Windows started and Windows containers selected, you can now run either Windows or Linux Containers simultaneously. The new –platform=linux command line switch is used to pull or start Linux images on Windows.
What’s the difference between a virtual machine and a container?
This topic discusses some of the key similarities and differences between containers and virtual machines (VMs), and when you might want to use each.
How to run a container on a VM?
In class, we will often run a container that stresses the underlying VM by generating some load on the CPU and memory so that we can see what effect it has on the underlying VM.
How are containers used in the operating system?
Containers build on top of the host operating system’s kernel (which can be thought of as the buried plumbing of the operating system), and contain only apps and some lightweight operating system APIs and services that run in user mode, as shown in this diagram.
How are Linux and Docker used to solve problems?
An outside-the-box exploration of how containers can be used to provide novel solutions. Most people are introduced to Docker and Linux containers as a way to approach solving a very specific problem they are experiencing in their organization.
