Can you run an engine without the valve cover?
running the engine without the valve cover is ok. it will make a mess but you wont lose “most of your oil” the cam spinning will just sling it everywhere i would recommend listening with the valve cover on. determine where the sound is coming from.
Do you need breathers on valve covers?
Yes you do need something to vent the crankcase pressure or you’ll start noticing stuff like blown out intake end seals, leaky rear main seal, dipstick blown out of the tube, etc… A hi-performance engine has more crankcase pressure so more “breather” is needed.

The valve cover is a casing found on the top of the engine. It covers the valves of the engine, protects the machinery from the elements, and prevents oil leaks. Cracks, corrosion, and misalignment of the valve cover can cause fluid to leak into the engine compartments and lead to engine failure.
Why do some valve covers need breathers?
The thought behind the breather is that you are supposed to get more fresh air flow down into the crankcase from the valve cover. This increases the cycle of oil vapor flow out of the crankcase. The added fresh air displaces the oil vapors in the crankcase with the assistance from the IM vacuum sucking it out.
Why do I need to replace my valve cover?
Failure of the valve cover PCV regulator diaphragm may only be a symptom of a greater problem: the PCV check valve in the intake manifold. If the intake manifold PCV check valve has failed and you only replace the valve cover, you will find yourself replacing valve covers every few months not knowing why.
Where to look for a bad valve cover?
With that said, if the oil is located on the valve cover area or coming from that region, you can assume you have a bad valve cover or gasket. Look around the edge where the gasket seals the cover to the engine. At first, it might just be a small leak that slowly drips onto the ground.
