Can you set up RAID with different drives?
It can be done, however the raid size is restricted to the smallest drive in the array. It’s generally frowned upon to use different drive types, let alone sizes for RAID, but it can be done if you don’t mind sacrificing the extra space on your larger drive to do it.
Do drives need to be identical for RAID?
RAID technology, since its original design, never required identical drives. More specifically, every hard drive attached to a controller (RAID or otherwise) always operates independently of every other hard drive attached to that controller.
How do RAID drives work?
RAID works by placing data on multiple disks and allowing input/output (I/O) operations to overlap in a balanced way, improving performance. Disk mirroring and disk striping can also be combined in a RAID array. An image of a hard drive in a RAID array.
Can you do RAID with 2 drives?
A RAID 1 array is built from two disk drives, where one disk drive is a mirror of the other (the same data is stored on each disk drive). Compared to independent disk drives, RAID 1 arrays provide improved performance, with twice the read rate and an equal write rate of single disks.
Can you RAID 2 different hard drives?
You can mirror more than one drive. It is called RAID10 because it is RAID1 (mirrored) and RAID0 (striped). RAID1 does NOT remove the need for backups. It will protect against a drive failure, but won’t protect against user error, software error, virus wipeout, etc.
Can RAID 5 use different size hard drives?
You can use RAID 5 with different sized disks physically, but within the RAID features they all have to be identicle. What would happen in your case if you configured a RAID5 with all 6 disks, is that the RAID would use 6 x 2TB leaving the four 4TB drives with 2TB of free space.
Does RAID 5 require identical drives?
Do all drives have to be the same model and capacity for a RAID 5 array? The short answer is No, the drives don’t have to be exactly the same. The longer explanation is that for compatibility reasons, we usually recommend using the same model.
Can you use different size hard drives in a NAS?
Synology does allow you to mix different make and size drives. But I would still recommend mixing only similar kind of drives. Either all of them are NAS drives like WD Red or desktop or pro drives. It will work, but there is no benefit from getting Pro drives.
What does raid stand for in storage category?
RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks or Drives, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a data storage virtualization technology that combines multiple physical disk drive components into one or more logical units for the purposes of data redundancy, performance improvement, or both.
What’s the difference between RAID 1 and Raid 2?
If one of two or more drives in this configuration fails, all data is lost. RAID 1, on the other hand, offers a safety net in the form of data redundancy. By mirroring the contents of one drive onto another, RAID 1 ensures that data remains available should one of the drives in this configuration meet an untimely end.
How does a raid work in a workstation?
RAID also works in workstations or DAS (direct-attached storage) devices for users seeking improved performance or data redundancy. Of course, RAID also works in SAN (storage area network) arrays, for those organizations that need to store block-based database and application data across a network.
What’s the difference between a Nas and a raid?
In this way, NAS differs from Direct Attached Storage. Like a RAID server, NAS uses a RAID configuration for redundancy and increased speed. However, because a RAID server is connected directly to the computer, it will naturally be faster than a NAS device. Latency in the network connection won’t affect a direct attached RAID array.
