Can you use IP as a routing protocol in internet?
It provides appropriate addressing information in its internet layer or network layer to allow a packet to be forwarded from one network to another. Examples of routed protocols are the Internet Protocol (IP) and Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX).
What is IP routing?
IP Routing is an umbrella term for the set of protocols that determine the path that data follows in order to travel across multiple networks from its source to its destination. The IP Routing protocols enable routers to build up a forwarding table that correlates final destinations with next hop addresses.
How routing works on the internet?
When a packet arrives at a router, the router examines the IP address put there by the IP protocol layer on the originating computer. The router checks it’s routing table. If the network containing the IP address is found, the packet is sent to that network. Hopefully the next router will know where to send the packet.

Every interface of router has a different network. Routers are also known as layer3 device. Various routing and routed protocols used for moving packets between different networks. Generally the IP routing in router is done by static routing, default routing and dynamic routing protocols.

The principles of routing can apply to any type of network, from telephone networks to public transportation. In packet-switching networks, such as the Internet, routing selects the paths for Internet Protocol (IP) packets to travel from their origin to their destination.
Why is reverse path important in Internet routing?
It is important to remember that Internet routing typically involves asymmetric paths – the traffic going towards a destination will take a separate set of hops on the return path. When performing traceroutes to diagnose routing issues it is very useful to obtain the reverse path to help isolate a particular direction of traffic being an issue.
What do you need to know about routing information?
The routing information contains an IP address prefix and subnet mask. This translates which IP addresses are associated with an autonomous system number (AS origin). Routing information propagates across these autonomous systems based upon policies that individual networks define.
