Note: Beginning September 2018 you won’t be able to use machine translation when you create variation labels in SharePoint. The language-locale pair for a variation site and the identifier for the top-level variation site and all sites, content, and so forth, under the top-level site.
Target variation sites The target variation sites receive most of their content from the source variation site. New content can be created on a target variation site. However, that content is not synced with other sites and is unique to the site on which it was created.
How are variation labels defined in SharePoint Server?
Variations of a site are defined by creating variation labels, one for each planned variation. SharePoint Server supports up to 209 variation labels. SharePoint Online supports up to 50 variation labels. Variation sites Variation sites are the sites that are created based on the defined variation labels.
