Do electric cars use obd2?
Although electric vehicles are not required to comply with OBD-II DLC connector standards or use the OBD-II CAN communication protocol, many do – especially vehicles with hybrid powertrains. Hybrid and electric vehicles have complex self-diagnostic systems.
What does the OBD II do?
OBD-II is an on-board computer that monitors emissions, mileage, speed, and other data about your car. It’s connected to the Check Engine light, which illuminates when the computer detects a problem. The OBD-II on-board computer features a 16-pin port located under the driver’s side dash.

Can a PEV be used in OBD-II mode?
Any advice, resources, information on how to use OBD-II style CAN messages for a PEV would be appreciated. It seems like every (lots of people on this forum) one is mixing up what OBD is and what CAN is. OBDII is a standard ratified in 1996 in the US. This standard is required by the government and incorporates 3 things.
Are there any PIDs for an electric car?
For an all electric vehicle things get tricky. To comply with OBDII, 90% of the data and DTCs are not applicable. Vehicle speed and throttle position are the only PIDs i can think off the top of my head.
Do you need to support all modes in OBD-2?
Vehicle manufactures are not required to support all modes. Each manufacturer may define additional modes above #9 (e.g.: mode 22 as defined by SAE J2190 for Ford/GM, mode 21 for Toyota) for other information (e.g.: the voltage of the Traction Battery in a HEV). The table below shows the standard OBD-II PIDs as defined by SAE J1979.
