Do I need to know my private key?
Knowledge of a private key is the only verification needed to spend an electronic coin. Private keys should therefore be kept secret. If you wanted, you could easily spend any available funds at this address because the private key is known to you.
How many private keys should I have?
You only need one key as the key belongs to your user. There is no need (and no improvement in security) by having one key per host. As long as your private key is kept private you can go with this single key and use it to authenticate yourself against multiple hosts. This is wrong.
Is it a good practice to change your private key?
Changing the private key is not a best practice, it is a widespread practice; it has in fact very little to do with security, and a lot to do with how common CA handle certificate renewals, i.e. most of the time like a new certificate, with a new private key generation.
When does the public key change on renewing a certificate?
If you re-use the same certificate request, the key will not change. If you generate a new request, that’ll typically (by default) generate a new key; re-using is sometimes useful e.g., to add another alternate domain name. If your certificate authority is not requiring a certificate request, then they must be re-using the old one.
How to assign private key to a new certificate after you?
SerialNumber is the serial number that you wrote down in step 17. In the Certificates snap-in, right-click Certificates, and then select Refresh. The certificate now has an associated private key. You can now use the IIS MMC to assign the recovered keyset (certificate) to the web site that you want.
What happens when I renew my SSL certificate?
When you renew that way, the underlying keys don’t change. In this scenario, you just renew your SSL public certificate, then download the certificate from the CA and update it in Cerberus. You don’t touch the private key at all (since it hasn’t changed). Your SSL certificate will be renewed but your SSH host key will remain unchanged.
