Do jet planes have windshield wipers?
Yes, airplanes do have windscreen wipers. The wipers are potentially useful for ground ops, takeoffs and landings. They do have different speed settings just like our cars. The two wipers operates independently, giving pilot and co-pilot control over their windshield.
Can we use aircraft windshield wipers during flight?
The wipers can be used in rainy conditions both on the ground and in the air, typically during the approach. We are not allowed to use the wipers, however, when flying at speeds higher than 230 knots (425 km/h) on the aircraft I fly.
When should rain repellent be used on an airplane windshield?
Despite the ease of use that the system provides, it should only be used during wet situations. If the chemicals are applied to dry windows, the repellent may actually reduce visibility. Additionally, window wipers should not be paired alongside a chemical rain repellent system as it may cause smearing.
Why are there windshield wipers on jet aircraft?
The manufacturers put them there so they can charge more for the aircraft. Also, on some jet aircraft, the airflow over the windshield at approach speeds (read: high angles of attack) isn’t sufficient to clear the windscreen. These aircraft will have either windshield wipers or bleed air ducts to clear the windshield during the approach.
Why was the cockpit window open on et-363?
Apparently the pilots of ET-363 on 2020-01-09 opened the cockpit window in flight to clean part of the windscreen from the remains of a locust swarm [1]: The windscreen wipers were not able to clear the windshield anymore.
Can a pilot open the cockpit side window?
The windscreen wipers were not able to clear the windshield anymore. The crew went around, climbed to 8500 feet, depressurized the aircraft, opened the cockpit side window and cleaned the windscreen by hand. The same happened on second approach to Dire Dawa.
Is it possible to open the windows on an airplane?
It depends on the airplane, and there are speed limits on the ones that can be open. The windows on mine can be open up to 140 knots, but that is barely flying speed so it’s really not practical.
