Do pilots flash landing lights to say hello?
Yes, it is true. When two aircraft flying in opposite directions pass each other at night, it is quite common for one or both to briefly turn on their landings lights. This is done partially to “say hello”, and also to increase situational awareness.
Do pilots greet each other?
Yes there is. Each airport will have its it’s own VHF frequency which usually is different than other nearby airports. Pilots are discouraged from chatting on these frequencies because they could interfere with necessary airport communications.

During night hours, no person shall operate an aircraft unless it has lighted position lights. These are referred to as Navigation Lights or commonly known as Position Lights. Aircraft Navigation lights don’t actually help the pilot navigate.
When do pilots turn on the landing lights?
Usually commercial pilots turn their landing lights on when taking off (when lined up the runway and when they have clearance for takeoff) and when airborne below 10,000ft. On arrival – landing lights are turned on when aircraft passes 10,000ft and they stay on until runway is vacated.
