Do switches look at IP addresses?
Remember: switch does not look into the IP packet and forwards frame as is based on destination MAC address.
What does an IP switch do?
The IP Switch Controller analyzes the first frame of a message and lets short-lived traffic, such as DNS and SNMP queries, flow through the Controller back to the switch. IP Switch uses the General Switch Management Protocol (GSMP) for call setup and the Ipsilon Flow Management Protocol (IFMP) for flow redirection.
Can I use a managed switch as unmanaged?
It is possible to run a managed switch and use it out of the box just like an unmanaged switch. By operating the managed switch in “Open Mode”, having no configuration set up, means the device will be set up to the default VLAN where all ports are members of the default VLAN.
Do we need to configure switch?
Most switches used by small businesses and home offices typically require no configuration — they’re “plug and play.” However, it’s important to remember that plug and play doesn’t always work. In addition, these switches certainly don’t offer any troubleshooting, logging, security, or manageability.
Do you have to configure a managed switch?
A managed switch (pretty much) defaults to the behavior of an unmanaged switch, so if you don’t configure anything there won’t be much of a difference (some managed switches default to activated spanning-tree protocol, for instance).
Can 2 subnets communicate?
Devices in different subnets can communicate. That is the purpose of a router. Routers route packets between different networks. Even if devices in different networks are on the same layer-2 broadcast domain, you need a router to let the devices communicate at layer-3.
Do you need an IP address for a network switch?
Unmanaged and layer 2 network switches do not have an IP address, whereas managed switches and layer 3 switches do. A network switch with an IP address is required for Telnet which allows remote access to the switch. The IP address of a switch can be found via the router or an IP scanner.
Is the unmanaged Ethernet switch an IP address?
Unmanaged switch does not have an IP address. It is a ethernet switch and its Switches ethernet packets and on the level of ethernet packets there are no IP addresses.
What is the difference between an Ethernet hub and a switch?
Ethernet hubs and switches are networking devices that connect computers [and IP devices] together. A hub is basic, offering simple data transmission capabilities to MAC addresses over Layer-1.
Do you need an IP address for Layer 3 switches?
Because some network switches like layer 3 have an ip address while layer 2 switches don’t have an ip address. They can. It does not matter to them switching packets. But if you want to log in and configure the switch over IP (e.g. ssh or snmp), it needs an IP address.
